We understand the importance of a healthy, functional smile. Crowns and bridges are custom-made restorations that help restore the strength, shape, and appearance of damaged or missing teeth.
Our team uses our technology to provide precise, long-lasting solutions. Focusing on comfort and quality, we’ll guide you through every step of the process so that you can enjoy a healthy smile.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, or “cap,” is a custom-made covering that encircles a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are ideal for teeth that are weak, cracked, or decayed—especially those that can’t be repaired with a filling. They can also cover dental implants, root-treated teeth, or discoloured teeth.
Some common reasons for a crown can include:
- Protecting weakened or cracked teeth
- Restoring broken or worn-down teeth
- Covering large fillings with insufficient tooth structure
- Holding a dental bridge in place
- Covering dental implants or root-treated teeth
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a permanent prosthetic used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is anchored by surrounding healthy teeth or dental implants, filling the gap to restore function and appearance.
Some reasons for a dental bridge can include:
- Filling the gap left by missing teeth
- Preventing surrounding teeth from shifting
- Maintaining facial structure
- Restoring the ability to chew, speak, and smile
- Enhancing your smile’s aesthetic
Who Needs a Crown or Bridge?
Crowns and bridges are ideal for people who have damaged, decayed, or missing teeth. Whether due to age, trauma, or other dental issues, these restorations help maintain optimal oral function and appearance.
Crowns may be needed for:
- Teeth weakened by decay, cracks, or wear
- Teeth that require protection after a root canal
Bridges are an option for:
- Replacing missing teeth when implants aren’t suitable
- Improving overall bite function and preventing further dental issues
Crowns typically last 5 to 15 years with proper care and maintenance, while bridges can last 10+ years.
How Are Crowns & Bridges Placed?
Both procedures are performed by our team using our in-office technology for precision and comfort.
Turnaround times vary, but crowns and bridges typically require 2 appointments—one for the preparation and impressions, and the second for final placement.
The Crown Process
- Consultation & assessment: We’ll examine your tooth to check if you’re a good candidate for a crown.
- Preparation: The tooth will be reshaped to allow space for the crown.
- Impressions: We take digital impressions, which are sent to a lab to design your custom crown.
- Fitting: Once the crown is ready, it will be placed and adjusted for a proper fit.
- Finalization: The crown will be cemented in place, restoring strength and function.
The Bridge Process
- Consultation & assessment: We’ll evaluate your surrounding teeth to ensure they’re healthy enough to support the bridge.
- Preparation: The abutment teeth are reshaped to accommodate the bridge.
- Impressions: Digital impressions are taken to create a custom bridge.
- Temporary bridge: A temporary bridge may be placed while your custom bridge is being made.
- Final placement: Once the bridge is ready, it is cemented in place, and the gap is filled.
Aftercare
After your crown or bridge is placed, it’s important to follow proper aftercare:
- Avoid hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours.
- Maintain good oral hygiene with brushing and flossing, paying special attention to the area around the crown or bridge.
- Visit for regular checkups to ensure the restoration is still intact and functioning well.
With proper care, your crown or bridge will serve you for many years, helping to restore both your smile and overall health.
